This article shows you how to create free ringtones for your iPhone, all you need is iTunes and a few songs you already own. This method is tested and works with iTunes 7.7.1 and iPhone 2.0.1 firmware. The only drawback is that you must use the songs that are DRM free (which means that the media are not protected iTunes songs are DRM protected, causing this method to fail).

How creating ringtones using iTunes only.

1. Find the track you want to create your ring and right click / select 'Get Info '.

2. Click on 'Options' tab and scroll to "Start Time" and "Stop Time". It is the starting point for your cut ringtone from and how long the alarm is going to be. Insert a start and stop time in these boxes, but remember the total length must be less than 30 seconds. Click OK

3. From this window, right click your 'clipped' song and select "Convert Selection to ACC. This will activate your chosen start and end.

(If your menu says a different format, you need to change your preferences, then go to iTunes> Preferences> Advanced> Importing. You then need to change the "Import with 'to' AAC Encoder ')

4. Find your music in your iTunes Music folder. Click on the song and drag it onto your desktop. If you do not want to keep track cut into iTunes, then simply return to the iTunes folder and remove the cut piece into your iTunes library.

5. Right click the song on your desktop. Click on 'Get Info'. Now just change the name of the extension. M4a to. M4R, this is if iTunes recognizes it as a ringtone.

All that remains to do is double click the file, it will then give you the opportunity to instruct ringing in your iTunes library and load it on your iPhone.
