If We Ever Make It Home
$9.99 One of the bright lights of new traditionalist country, Wade Bowen has brought his seasoned singer-songwriter style to a growing audience since 1998. His third studio album, IF WE EVER MAKE IT HOME, is a homespun blend of wispy pedal steel and power hooks made poignant through Bowen's introspective and heartfelt storytelling. The album note proudly carries a quote from Willie Nelson: "You can't make a record if you ain't got nothing to say." Fair warning. But rest assured, Bowen has plenty on his mind--and speaks it with an eloquence and an honest, folksy delivery that will win you over. |

The Best B-Sides Ever
$7.18 The Boy Least Likely To were one of the most delightful indie pop outfits of the 2000s, but hardly one of the most prolific, so it's a great boon to fans of their ramshackle twee to have the loose ends of their output to date compiled here -- especially so since most of it is first-rate stuff, entirely in keeping with the style and quality of their albums. As its title suggests, this disc (which was initially bundled with pre-ordered copies of their sophomore album, The Law of the Playground, and later made available at independent record shops) collects the B-sides of the singles from their debut, The Best Party Ever, with one perhaps wise omission: the highly improbable Armand Van Helden remix of "Monsters" (it's more listenable than you might expect, but it would certainly disrupt the flow here). There's also "Faith," a rendition of the George Michael chestnut that first appeared on a Q magazine freebie disc of '80s covers -- it might sound a bit funny on paper but it works marvelously, a sweet and relatively straight reworking (albeit swapping the original's Bo Diddley groove for a simple plodding two-step), at least until the recorders, glockenspiel, and toy percussion kick in for an instrumental bridge. The other cover here, of the Field Mice's somewhat dour acoustic ballad "Between Hello and Goodbye" (itself a B-side to begin with) is more reverent and less revelatory, though nice enough. The originals, however, are all prime Boy, deploying the full arsenal of banjos, xylos, synthesizers, and assorted kiddie instrumentation; spanning the spectrum from bouncy ("Oddballs") to tender ("Cuddle Me"); and boasting melodies that in some cases rank among their finest work -- particularly the jubilant "Rock Upon a Porch with You" and wistful "When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Boy Again," both of which seek to shortcut the gap between childhood and old age, though working from opposite ends of the equation. Simply put, anybody who has treasured the Boy Least Likely To's superb albums will find there's that much more to love on this brief but satisfying collection. ~ K. Ross Hoffman, Rovi |

To the Best Mum in the World...Ever!
$12.99 EMI's To the Best Mum in the World... Ever! follows in the footsteps of previous compilations like Dad Rocks!, where the compilers turn late-night MP3 mixes that conform (very loosely) to a (mostly familial) theme into budget-price nostalgia bombs aimed at the wallets of lazy kids on Mother's or Father's Day. That said, they're usually pretty entertaining, and Best Mum in the World is no exception. Spanning pop history from Sinatra to the Spice Girls, it's hard to argue with the dumb fun of it all, even if was probably generated by inserting the word "mom" into a music search engine. ~ James Christopher Monger |

MADE
$15.18 Hip-hop veteran Scarface doesn't evolve much or waiver from his usual hardcore, minimal sound on his 2007 effort MADE, but that doesn't mean his loyal fan base shouldn't eat it up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. MADE is Scarface doing everything right, delivering those cold, hardcore rhymes over uncomplicated, soulful beats. He's inspired enough to carry this almost guest-free album on his own, and if anything's changed about his lyrics, it's that he's more willing than ever to show his maturity. On the highlight "Big Dog Status" he tells the younger generation to stop worrying about the price tag of their ride and start thinking about what it takes to stay in the game for life. "Boy Meets Girl" is an insightful story of a hood relationship gone wrong while the bleak "The Suicide Note" wonders how Face's old neighborhood slipped into hell so fast. Memorable choruses and hooks like the ones found on "Never" and "Dollar" round the album out just enough, although a couple of redundant numbers keep this from being one of his best. Oddly enough, the rapper picks up his guitar for the album but doesn't hand in a production, leaving it up to Mike Dean, Drumma Boy, and One Drop Scott to deliver the satisfying beats. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi |

Ronnie Spector's Best Christmas Ever
$5.58 Ronnie Spector sang on A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector, arguably the greatest rock & roll Christmas album ever made, and even if Darlene Love got the best lead vocals on that classic LP, it still looms large enough in Ronnie's legacy that any time she tries to make a holiday record, it's going to measured against that accomplishment. Ronnie Spector's Best Christmas Ever is an optimistically titled EP that features five Yuletide tunes from the former Ronettes vocalist and girl group icon, and if it predictably doesn't hold a candle to the 1963 classic, it's a solid piece of work and shows that Spector's voice is still in great shape and she knows what to do with it. The real drawback here is that these five songs are serviceable but ultimately nothing special, and while "My Christmas Wish" and "Best Christmas Ever" lean toward '60s style R&B-influenced rock, which plays to Spector's strengths, "It's the Time (Happy Holidays)" is a Latin-flavored number whose style doesn't flatter her, and "Light One Candle" is pre-fab pop with a lamentable sub-Kenny G sax solo. "It's Christmas Once Again" is a sweet and well-crafted bit of '50s-styled pop, but it's also recycled from Spector's 2006 album Last of the Rock Stars. The production and arrangements are competent and professional, if not always inspired, and Spector sounds great and offers moving asides on two numbers in which she shares monologues about her childhood memories of the holiday. No one is likely to recall Ronnie Spector's Best Christmas Ever in 47 years the way folks still remember A Christmas Gift to You in 2010, but it clearly proves she's still one of the great voices of the girl group era, and she still has the pipes and the spunk to make this disc worth hearing, even if the material she's given is flawed. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Vadim Canby - Horn Engineer; Anthony Pirollo - Cello; Chiquita Green - Vocals (Background); Chrysyn Harp - Viola; Eboni Strings - Strings; Jake Evans - Vocals (Background); Jamie Evans - Vocals (Background); Janice McClain - Vocals (Background); Jeremy Chatzky - Bass (Electric), Bass (Upright); |

M.A.D.E.
$11.14 Despite his longtime association with Jay-Z, the best and most popular rapper alive during the early 2000s, Memphis Bleek nonetheless continually struggled to overcome his protégé reputation and break through on his own, and his third album, M.A.D.E., again falls a bit short of that mark. Even so, it's a marked improvement for Bleek, a definite step forward and a sure showcase of his growing maturity. His first two albums, Coming of Age (1999) and Understanding (2000), had their moments, usually on the singles, but for the most part, they weren't lasting statements. If anything, they stated that Bleek was no Jay-Z and had a long way to go if he ever wanted to approach those heights. Then he dropped off for a while. In fact, it took him three years until he returned with M.A.D.E., which is longer than some less fortunate rappers' careers -- in other words, a short lifetime in rap years. But the time off seemingly served Bleek well. Throughout M.A.D.E., his flow is tighter than ever, he gets the best beats of his career, and he performs with ferocity on most songs: the opening run of "Everything's a Go" (with Jay-Z), "Round Here" (with Trick Daddy and T.I.), and "Just Blaze, Bleek & Free" (with Freeway) -- all of which are produced by Just Blaze -- get the album off to an astounding start. There's really nowhere to go but down from here, of course, but the remaining hour of music has its moments, albeit sporadic ones. In particular, Kanye West turns in a surprisingly straight interpolation of Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T." (titled "I Wanna Love U"), Scott Storch turns in a moody Dr. Dre-sounding production ("We Ballin'"), and Just Blaze turns in yet another hot track, a laid-back collabo with Beanie Sigel and Jay-Z ("Hypnotic"). In contrast, there are some fumbles, in particular a run-of-the-mill Nate Dogg duet that aims for "21 Questions" territory but misses. Taken as a whole, M.A.D.E. isn't the standup statement of purpose that Bleek needed to drop, especially after he spent three years on the down-low, but it's a noteworthy stride forward for the young rapper. Sure, a lot of the accolades should go out to Just Blaze, who carries the bulk of this album with his endlessly inventive productions, but Bleek deserves his share of props too. A lot of would-be critics wrote him off years prior, yet he soldiered on, held his composure, and returned with a sporadically great album. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi Performers: Denim - Vocals (Background); Brian Horton - Flute; E Bass - Guitar |

In the Ever
$11.14 2008 album from the American singer/songwriter and his first release on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records label. Mason Jennings is one of the best-kept secrets in Pop music. In his adopted home of Minneapolis his shows draw 3,000 fans. He was hand-picked by music supervisor Randall Poster to perform two Dylan songs in Todd Haynes' acclaimed I'm Not There, both on the soundtrack album, and lip-synched by Christian Bale in the movie. Jennings retreated to a studio in the woods, where he set himself up with a laptop and two microphones. In the Ever continues Jennings' spiritual journey, informed by his love of influences like Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash's American recordings and Led Zeppelin, his favorite band of all time. Performers: Jonny Polonsky - Organ (Pump); Chris Morrissey - Vocal Harmony, Bass (Upright), Harmony Vocals; Arabella Kauffman - Bass; David Boucher - Bass; Jack Johnson - Vocals |
