The British Touch label asked a large number of artists from the sound art/experimental music community to create custom ring tones for whenever it would be possible to use them. This CD proposes over one hundred possibilities -- there are 99 tracks, but some contain more than one ring tone. From warped phone bells to clever jokes and complete five-second sound art pieces, Touch Ringtones is an homage to conciseness and public annoyance. Participating artists include Ryoji Ikeda, Hazard, Carsten Nicolai, Phill Niblock, Pan Sonic's Mika Vainio, and Oren Ambarchi, among many others. Free improv saxophonist Evan Parker also submits a circular-breathing tone and animal recordings from Chris Watson and Doug Quinn's libraries widen the scope of possibilities. The problem: As an album, its interest remains pretty limited. Sure, it is fun to hear what each person came up with, but once you have listened to it once, you will probably only take it out to show off to friends -- while you wait for the time you can actually use it, that is. In a radical departure from established practice, Casey O'Callaghan provides a systematic treatment of sound and sound experience, and shows how thinking about audition and appreciating the relationships between multiple sense modalities can enrich our understanding of perception and the mind. Sounds proposes a novel theory of sounds and auditory perception. Against the widely accepted philosophical view that sounds are among the secondary or sensible qualities, O'Callaghan argues that, on any perceptually plausible account, sounds are events. But this does not imply that sounds are waves that propagate through a medium, such as air or water. Rather, sounds are events that take place in one's environment at or near the objects and happenings that bring them about. This account captures the way in which sounds essentially are creatures of time, and situates sounds in a world populated by items and events that have significance for us. Sounds are not ethereal, mysterious entities. O'Callaghan's account of sounds and their perception discloses far greater variety among the kinds of things we perceive than traditional views acknowledge. But more importantly, investigating sounds and audition demonstrates that considering other sense modalities teaches what we could not otherwise learn from thinking exclusively about the visual. Sounds articulates a powerful account of echoes, reverberation, Doppler effects, and perceptual constancies that surpasses the explanatory richness of alternative theories, and also reveals a number of surprising cross-modal perceptual illusions. O'Callaghan argues that such illusions demonstrate that the perceptual modalities cannot be completely understood in isolation, and that the visuocentric model for theorizing about perception --according to which perceptual modalities are discrete modes of experience and autonomous domains of philosophical and scientific inquiry--ought to be abandoned.

Sounds $7.98 Although involvement as an integral contributor to the San Sebastian Strings kept Anita Kerr's relationship with Warner Bros. going for another few years, 1968's Sounds concluded her brief yet prolific solo stint with the label. In many ways -- retrospect being one of them -- Kerr's final effort may well be her best during the two years (1966-1968) she spent on the Warner roster. Likewise, it harks back to her early style of finding material that hadn't necessarily been hits. In fact, the only real prerequisite was the song's adaptability to Kerr's unique musical touch -- as an instrumental by the Anita Kerr Orchestra or a reconfigured vocal arrangement via the Anita Kerr Singers. It is the latter ensemble that is assembled here, featuring the talents of Kerr (soprano/soloist), who is joined by Gene Merlino (tenor), B.J. Baker (alto), and Bob Tebow (bass). Rather than scour for rock & roll residue, Kerr trusts her instincts, coming up with a dozen of the most modern easy listening sides of the era. The opener, "Happiness" (aka "Happiness Is") returns the combo to the refined pop pomp infused into the Anita Kerr Singers' Slightly Baroque project from 1966. The minor chord changes and occasional dark vocal inflections are enough to best the Association's better-known version. The hauntingly beautiful melody to "Wine in the Wind" provides Kerr a perfect outlet for her ethereal lingering lead.
